Speeding and Traffic Violations

Many people who are charged with a traffic infraction, such as speeding or running a red light or stop sign, will plead guilty to the charges in order to avoid the inconvenience of going to court or the expense of hiring an attorney. However, in many cases, pleading guilty to seemingly minor charges can unexpectedly lead to the suspension or revocation of a driver's license, substantial fines, unanticipated administrative charges and assessments, increased auto insurance premiums or even the cancellation of insurance coverage. However, an experienced attorney can often secure a more favorable disposition and avoid many of these consequences.

It is also critical that a ticket for a traffic infraction not be ignored. If a ticket is not addressed by the date stated on the ticket, your driver's license could be suspended and it could impact your ability to register your vehicle.

Certain traffic matters, such as driving without insurance or driving without a valid operator's license, are more serious and are classified as criminal misdemeanors and carry more significant penalties. Various other traffic matters, including certain alcohol related offenses, are even more serious and are classified as criminal felonies. Convictions for misdemeanor and felony traffic matters will be reflected on an individual's criminal record and can be punishable by steep fines and even imprisonment.

Although traffic matters may seem minor and insignificant, it is always advisable to consult with an attorney to discuss the options available in defending a Vehicle & Traffic Law charge.
