Nursing home abuse occurs when nursing home professionals abuse, neglect or exploit the elders in their care. Nursing home abuse can be damaging physically, emotionally or financially. Physical abuse is non-accidental use of physical force against an elderly person, which can result in pain, impairment or even death. Emotional abuse occurs when elders are verbally threatened, ridiculed or humiliated and can even result in physical symptoms. Financial abuse occurs as fraud or exploitation when abusers use their position of authority to extort money from the elderly person.
